Water & Earth
Technologies, Inc. (WET) modeled (using HELP 3 and UNSAT-H) numerous
overburden dump growth medium cap (GMC) systems to determine dump
configurations that encouraged surface runoff and limited infiltration
through the implementation of an internal lateral drain or capillary break.
The unsaturated-zone modeling was conducted to develop GMC design scenarios
that would prevent or minimize potential seepage through overburden dumps
that could contain selenium. RUSLE 1.06 and SEDCAD 4.0 models were used to
design conceptual surface treatments (down drains, riprap, diversion
channels, terraces, berms, other best management practices) to control
surface-water runoff and protect against long-term erosion and
sedimentation. |
